Teabag Experiment - Physics

Today, our maths class did a bit of experimenting on a teabag. Mrs Stone set it on fire and it rose to the roof. Here is how it happened.

Its like a hot air balloon. When Mrs Stone set the teabag on fire, the air inside of it started to heat up. Because it heated up, it starts to rise because heat always rises. It pushes against the fabric walls of the teabag, which causes it to rise into the air.

Heat rises because it has more energy and is less dense than cold air. This means that the particles in cold air are closer together and they have less energy than hot air.

Astria - Extension Task

Today, in extension, we were given the opportunity to play a new game called, Astria. It is based all around Critical Thinking.

“Students don’t learn much playing this game called Astria – Countdown to Impact: Their time could be better spent doing other things”.

Do you agree, disagree or partly agree/disagree?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From my own perspective, I partly agree/disagree. I agree that you aren't exactly learning much while playing this particular game, but at the same time I disagree because you are still at least learning something important. This game tests you on your critical thinking, which is something like judgment. But in this game, it is important to know how to judge the documents you are given. Wether they are useless, or wether they could be of use.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On a scale of 1-5, how successfully did you problem solve with your partner today?

Please include any ways you would collaborate differently with them next time you play.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My Partner (Sheales) and I worked together quite well actually. We took turns at reading the documents and advice given in the game, we took turns at judging the documents and we got quite far in the game but weren't given enough time to finish. Next week, we will be given the opportunity to finally finish the game, and hopefully learn more from it. Sheales and I work good together and nothing needs to be changed or improved.

3 Elements of Art - Lady Pink

There are many different elements of art. Our task today was to choose a famous artist and explain 3 of the many elements of art, that they have used in one of their works. I have decided to explain one of the works of, Lady Pink. She uses majority of the elements to share her messages in her art, with the public.
Color is one of the many elements that makes Pink's work stand out compared to others. Her artwork is completely based around, Graffiti. She uses many different colors to express her love for graffiti and to spread her main message around Women's Rights. Lady Pink can get very very creative with her colors.

Image result for Lady Pinks artPink also uses the element of shape to express her passion for Graffiti. The different amounts of shape shows what is on her mind, while she draws and paints, which eventually turns into a big piece of art known as a, "Mural." Different shapes are used to make different murals which expresses her passion and love for the art.

Last but not least comes the element of, Line. Lines are marks which are made by a drawing tool to create a piece of art.  As you can see in many artists works, they use a lot of lines to show their meaning behind their works. Pink uses a lot of different lines such as, curvy, horizontal and vertical as well as diagonal.

Image result for Lady Pinks artSo, to make it clear, Color is the element that reflects light off of a variety of objects. There are 3 main characteristics to do with color. Which are, hue (Main property of the colors), value (How light or dark it is) and intensity (How bright or dull it is).

Shape is a closed in line. They can be geometric like squares, circles or triangles. Shapes can also be organic like free-form or natural.

And Line is a mark which is made by a specific drawing tool. They can be, long or short, horizontal or vertical, curvy or straight or even thick or thin.

Inquiry Term 3 - New Skill (Double-Dutch)

Hey there, Bloggers! For the past 4 weeks, Team 5 at P.E.S has been given a task to get into groups using the people in their classes, and find a new skill that they haven't learnt. I had 10 other people in my group. Their names were, Angels, Tata, Mata, Tehillah, Armanielle, Fetuao, Maree, Angel, Calais, Maryanne and myself, Atareita. Altogether, none of us had experienced the skill we were learning before. The skill that we chose was, "Double Dutch." We particularly chose to learn this skill because no one in our group had learnt it, and we found it challenging which was exactly what we wanted. So, that was the skill that we were meant to be learning for the past 4 weeks, and finally today was the day where everyone had to show off the new skill that they chose and learnt.

My Perspective:

Our groups performance was round about average. I controlled the ropes majority of the time, but yet I still tried my hardest to jump in between as well. That was the thing I found hardest. Jumping in between and timing it. I think that next time, I could try to practice more than I did in the past weeks. I could've tried harder and maybe then I would've made it longer jumping in between the ropes. To perfect our skill we tried to ask others if they had experienced it before but that didn't work so we moved on to using YouTube videos and tutorials which helped us majorly.

Positives of learning our new skill:

The positive side was learning something new and at least giving it a try. I was proud that everyone in our group had a go even when they didn't want to and even though they knew they couldn't do it. We found double dutch really fun which was a positive side of our new skill.

Negatives of learning our new skill:

I couldn't really point out anything negative about double dutch, because everyone had a go and we all had fun. No one found it boring, so I couldn't find anything negative about this new skill.

Perseverance:

I persevered when we performed and throughout the past 4 weeks by controlling the ropes when no one else wanted to and kept swinging them even though my arms were getting tired. I also tried my best to jump in between on time and I did my best to encourage everyone else in my group as well.

Move Ya' Body Workbook - #2

For the past 4 weeks we had to find a new skill that we had never done before.
My group decided to do, "Double Dutch." This was quite hard at first and still is.
But we tried our best and this is our workbook that we had for this skill.

KPMG Trip - MTV Cribz

A few weeks ago, we were given the privilege to visit the KPMG company. Our task was to pick a topic and create a movie about it. My group (Charles, David, Amelia, Paikea, Angels and Myself!) decided to do a MTV. So, this is what we created during our visit at KPMG (Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler)

Polynesian Navigators

Last term, in extension, we were given a task to pick a group and research about it. My group
decided to research about, "Polynesian Navigators." Here is what we found.

Why The Ocean Is Blue

Far back in the midst of time, when the world was very young, our waters were white. The surface was completely covered in pure, white water with unknown creatures lurking beneath it. No blue was to be found anywhere in the oceans or seas. This was around a century or so ago before the massive change happened.
Before this massive change, the ocean was filled with boredom. No one enjoyed swimming, no one liked fishing and no one even wanted to go out on the water, because of it’s boring plain colour.

The New Zealand Government had been discussing for a quite a long time, trying to find a way to make the world happier again. To make the ocean more exciting. Our Government agreed with everyone when they said that the ocean was just too simple. It needed colour. It needed enthusiasm. It needed, HELP. Everyone whined day by day, because they believed that our waters were a main landscape that brought out the joy and happiness in their lives. This was such a huge problem because with a boring landscape that travelled across the whole world for everyone to see, came the lack of interest included with the lack of fun.

For, a couple days later, they had finally come to decision. The decision to take the earth by storm. A ma by the name of, “Julius Vogel,” found a way to make the ocean more creative as well as improve the happiness state in the world. This particular man designed signs to hang on poles around the place inviting the entire city to come and observe his decision to change the waters. His idea was so crazy that when people saw the sign which said, “You are invited to join me and the government at Pt England Beach/Reserve where we will finally put an end to your misery by changing the ocean! We will be down there next week, so come along!” they just ignored it and said, “Ha! How do you expect to do that? There's no way!”

It was a week later, it came to the day where Julius Vogel was finally going to make this huge change. He arrived down at the beach with all of his supplies hoping for everyone to already be there. But sadly, no one had showed up. He waited and waited and a few hours went by and he just sad on the rocks waiting for someone to show up. But no one did. So, he made up his mind. He asked himself, “Would people come if they saw the affect  my change happening across the ocean?” Then he went ahead. He carried his box of supplies from up on the reserve, opened all of his bottle and dumped the liquid into the ocean. A few minutes went by and a bunch of people came out of nowhere cheering and jumping for joy screaming, “Our oceans! Our oceans, there blue! YAY!!” Then after an hour or so, the entire city was cheering for Julius because of what he had done.

By the end of the day, all of our waters were blue and the creatures that had been lurking beneath have now come out from hiding and are swimming freely.   *Our task was to create our very own pourquoi tale. A Pourquoi tale is a fictitious story about something living. Example - How Tiger Got His Stripes, How Giraffe Got Its Long Neck.

Benefits of Physical Activity!

Benefits of "Physical Activity!"

Physical Activity is also known as Fitness or Exercise. And like everything else, you get benefits
out of being a regular exerciser. This means exercising on the daily, and committing to keeping
yourself healthy. Like I said before, benefits come out of it. Such as, getting fit, improving your body
image and you are able to do a lot more things than the average person can. Here are some benefits
that you can get out of becoming a regular exerciser!

#1. It Strengthens the Heart! - First of all, you may not know, but your heart is also a muscle.
Like any other muscles, exercise can strengthen them as a result in making you stronger and stronger.
This means that when you exercise, you’re muscles may get bigger and stronger each day.
Since the heart is also a muscle, fitness improves the hearts beating speed and keeps it strong and
healthy. Having a weak heart can lead, “Ischemic Cardiomyopathy” which occurs when your heart
becomes too weak to pump enough blood to the rest of your body due to coronary artery disease.
The blood vessels attached to the heart muscle narrow and eventually become blocked. Approximately
90% of people that are diagnosed with, “Ischemic Cardiomyopathy” aren’t able to live past a year.

#2. Reduces Risks of Deadly Diseases! - Fitness does a huge part when it comes to illnesses
and keeping your body healthy. On the inside! I say on the inside because some people think that it
only improves your body image, and how you look on the outside. But, no. It affects majorly on the
inside of your body. This means that some exercise could do damage but most exercise helps you
when you are sick or when you have failing body parts. Scientists haven’t found exactly what exercise
is needed but try anything and see if it works. Exercise helps to reduce the risk of developing heart
disease, cancer, stroke and diabetes.

#3. Gives you a Longer n Happier Life! - Scientists believe that fitness has a big positive impact
on depression, anxiety and ADHD. It also boosts overall mood. The average person, is happy less
than 50% of the time, compared to exercisers which are happy most of their lifetime due to the kind of
different body-movements they may do during their lifetime.  Research on depression, anxiety and
exercise shows that the psychological and physical benefits of exercise can also help improve mood
and sleep as well as reduces stress and anxiety. Regular physical activity also lowers blood pressure,
burns body fat, and lowers blood sugar levels, all of which benefit heart health. The power of exercise
to help the heart cannot be understated. Regular exercisers have been proven to live at least 4 years
more than the normal age rate.

So, overall exercise is amazingly good for you! It helps you not only on the outside but on the inside
as well. Majorly! At first, I didn’t know so many good benefits that could come out of exercising until I
did a bit of research and, BOOM! Its amazing how the Internet can help you these days. Yeah, but
anyways, exercising is a major thing in everyone's lives and like I said before, keeping fit and healthy
leads to happiness. It also gives you options to be stuck on the couch or day playing fortnite these
days and stuffing your face, but you also have to option to get up, go for a walk/jog/run and have a
bit of exercise as well as enjoy your day! There are also gyms that are useful when you can’t workout
outside because of bad weather. So, today is your day! Your day to get off that couch and get up and
benefit not only you, but the people surrounding you. I was told that, “If you believe, then you can
achieve!” If you believe in yourself, than you can do anything you put your mind to. Today is YOUR day! All you have to do is...BELIEVE!

3 Laws of Motion

3 Laws Of Motion

First Law Of Motion - INERTIA
  1. A still object will stay as is
  2. A moving object will keep moving with the same speed
  3. Won’t change unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
  4. Things want to stay where they are
  5. Laziness - The object won’t move

Second Law Of Motion - FORCE & ACCELERATION
  1. Heavy and light has different movements
  2. Force = Mass x Acceleration
  3. Law states that the rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the
  4. unbalanced force in the direction of force.
  5. The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force exerted and inversely
  6. proportional to the object’s mess

Third Law Of Motion - ACTION & REACTION
  1. When you kick the ball, your leg is the force and the ball is the motion.
  2. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  3. A force in anything.
  4. Force is gravity
  5. Action is when you do something
  6. Reaction is what happen
Newtons 3 Laws of Motion

First of all, what are the 3 laws of motion? What does this mean? Well, Issac
Newton is a famous scientist who came up with these 3 laws of motion. Which are -
1) Inertia, 2) Force & Acceleration, and 3) Action & Reaction. All of these laws have
different meanings and they all do different things. These are involved in our life a lot,
even when you don’t know it. So...for those who need to know what these laws are,
I’m here to tell you. Lets Go!

First Law of Motion - Inertia

So, what is Inertia? Inertia is when an object stays in its same position. This means
that something is very hard to move and will often stay in its unchanging position.
It will remain still unless acted upon by an external or unbalanced force. Inertia is the
resistance of any sort of physical object to any change in its state of motion. For
example - You won’t be able to push a wall forward, or you won’t be able to pull it
towards you. Unless you use something destructive like a wrecking ball or another
hard machine used for such things like breaking walls or bustings things down.

Second Law of Motion - Force & Acceleration

What is Force & Acceleration? Well, force is any push or pull acted upon an object in
any direction. So, if I push a box left, me pushing it is the force and the box moving is
the motion.
But, acceleration is more complicated then that. Acceleration doesn’t only
have a magnitude, but it also has a direction. This law states that force on an object
equals the mass times the acceleration. Mass x Acceleration = Force. Also heavy and
light objects have different movements.

Third Law of Motion - Action & Reaction

What is Action & Reaction? Newton said, “For every action, there is an equal and
opposite reaction.” Which means that if something is acted upon there will always
be a reaction. Like, if I hit someone, they will react in some way. An Action is when
you do something, like if you kick a ball thats an action. A reaction is when you’re
action makes something react to what you did. Reaction is what happens after you’re
action.

Facts about Issac Newton

Issac Newton was a famous scientist. He worked in many areas of mathematics and
physics. Newton developed the theories of gravitation in 1666, thats when he was
only 23 years old. About 20 years later, he created his 3 laws of Motion. In 1687, he
published, ‘Philosophae Naturalis Prinicipia Mathematica’ This was regarded to be
the one of the important books in the history of science. In it he describes universal
gravitation and the 3 laws of motion.

Fab Fractions

Fabulous Fractions
We are learning to identify the relationship between fractions.

What is 2/4 of 50? 25

What is ½ of 50? 25

What is 4/4 of 8?   This is the same as 1 whole of 8

What is ⅕ of 10? 2

What is 2/10 of 10? 2

What is ⅓ of 12? 4

What is 2/6 of 12? 4

What is 1/13 of 26? 2

What is 2/26 of 26? 2

What do you notice about these fractions?

Show your working for the remainder of the problems

I have 2/16 of a cake at a birthday party. I keep going back for more
and eat another  6/16 of a cake. What fraction of a cake have I eaten
altogether? 2/16 + 6/16 = 8/16

⅓ + ⅔ =      3/3 or 1 whole

⅙ + 2/6 =     3/6 or 1/2

12/25 + 3/25 = 15/25

I have 5/21 of a cake left over from the party. Then I give 3/21 of a cake
to my sisters. What fraction of a cake do I have left over? 5/21 - 3/21 = 2/21

½ + 2/4 =  1 whole

3/6 + ⅔ = 7/6

⅕ + 2/10 = 2/5
