WALT: Add and subtract decimals to 3 decimal places.

This week my group (Compasses) and I have been working on this presentation since last week now. This presentation includes, Adding Decimals, Place value and much more. The poster that you can see on the left is part of this activity. It has also helped me with my decimals. It is pretty much a pyramid of added decimals. It also fits well with my - WALT. 

Place Value

WALT: Demonstrate use of new knowledge about Place Value. Add and subtract decimals to 3 decimal places. 

These is my Place Value Houses. There are, Hundred Thousands, Ten Thousands, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and Ones. I was given eight numbers and I had to put them in their columns. Take a look and I hope that you enjoy. 

Match Up Activity

Fractions of a Number

WALT -  Understand the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages.

Water Poster - HELP SAVE WATER!!

This is my water poster. I have created this poster to show people how important it is to take care of our world's water supply. As you can see I am talking about pollution. We need your help to sort out this problem. Comment down below, telling me ideas of how you can help to save the lakes, creeks, streams and rivers from pollution. 

Maths Word Problems

WALT -  Illustrate (draw/show) the steps we used to solve each problem

This week we were learning not just how to find out the answer, but to also show our solving out. At the end of the presentation, we were given another task to pick anyone of the questions and make a poster about it. I decided to do the 1st question. The questions that we were given were quite hard, but I still made it to the end. I learnt that even somethings are hard, just try, try and try again until you get it. I enjoyed a little bit of a challenge. Hint: When it is hard for you to just think of the answer in your head, it is easier to write down your solving out on a piece of paper. 

Multiplication Pyramid

WALT -  Find a rule to a sequential pattern. 
Here is my task for Week 2 of Term 1 for 2017. I had to find the rule and create a multiplication pyramid. This is what I've done. 

Staining Experiment

This week we have been given a task to create an experiment using stains. We created a Turmeric stain on a white piece of fabric and used different methods to see, which household cleaner does the best job of removing turmeric stains from fabric? We tried, Dish washing Liquid, Laundry Powder and also Fabric Stain Remover Gel. We applied the detergents to the stains and then left them to dry out for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes was up, we went outside and rinsed the stained fabric with cold water. Then, we figured out which household cleaner did the best job?? The Fabric Stain Remover Gel did the best job of removing the turmeric stain from the fabric.

BEHIND THE DOOR

It was a sunny day in a suburb which was named Pt England. People were playing outside and kids were at school. Except for this one little boy, Jack. Jack absolutely hated school. So, he never went. Jack just stayed home and some days he would also like to ride his bike around the neighbourhood.

But, one day, a tourist named, Amy arrived in Pt England. So, Jack went up to her and welcomed Amy to Pt England. “What has brought you to this lovely suburb may I ask?” Jack said to Amy. “Well, I’m from Tonga and I have been to a lot of different countries. Like, Samoa, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Niue and much more. I’m a tourist.” Amy replied. “I actually have a friend sitting my house while our was on vacation. I’m going there now.” She said. “Ok! Well goodbye for now and I’ll hopefully see you around the neighbourhood.” Jack replied.

Amy just realised something, “Jack? Why aren’t you at school? Are you sick or something?” Jack said, “No. I just really hate school. So, I stay home with my mum.” “Oh ok. Bye!” Amy yelled to Jack while she was walking to her house. Which was just down the street.

The Next Day

Amy decides to go for a walk down the street and notices that Jack is just around the corner. So, she walks up to him and says, “Hiya, Jack! Isn’t it a beautiful, sunny day.” Jack replies, “Yeah! It sure is.” “Hey Amy? Would you like to go for a walk around the neighbourhood with me?” “Sure! I was walking around by myself and a little company would be awesome.” So, Jack and Amy wonder around and they come to a house that has signs up all around it.

Signs say, DANGER! BEWARE OF THE HAUNTED HOUSE! GHOSTS AND CLOWNS! TURN BACK! DON’T GO IN! OR SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES! But, Amy is determined to see what is really behind the door of this mysterious abandoned house.

Furthermore, Amy enters the house and Jack is too scared to go in because of what the signs say. Jack tries to convince Amy not to go in, “Amy don’t go in! You’re going to get hurt! But, she just doesn’t listen. She goes in and realises that the door slammed shut. She starts screaming and shouting. She shouts to Jack, “Jack!! Get HELP! PLEASE?! QUICK!! Call the police or something! Just get some help!!

Jack notices that Amy has left her phone outside on the grass. He picks it up and calls the police. The police come as fast as they can and try to rescue Amy out of the Haunted Mysterious House. About 30mins later, the house just opens the door and Amy comes sprinting out. She trips and one of the police officer's dash to her and save Amy from falling into a pit of doom.

Amy gets rescued and she swears never to go into or near that Haunted Mysterious House ever again. After that, Jack and Amy take another stroll in the park and forget that nothing ever happened. They both just live their normal lives.

Letter to PM - Practice Extension

Dear (Prime Minister) John Key,

My name is Atareita and I am a year 6 student at Pt England School. I am writing to you about the issue of pollution. Many people agree that pollution has become a huge problem in Auckland because people from different locations have been throwing their trash into our lakes, rivers and oceans. It is very bad for the creatures in our waters because, if rubbish keeps on getting thrown away in the waters, then the creatures living in it will think that it is food and eat it. But, if they eat it then they will die because it gets stuck in their stomachs and they are not able to get it out of them.

Secondly, I believe that you should make punishments for people who litter.  You could make a law where if someone spotted a person littering, then you get an immediate fine. Maybe about $100. Or to stop people from throwing garbage down the drains, you could set up something that stops garbage from going through the drains and into the ocean.

If you don’t do something about this problem then it is going to become more worse and the creatures living in our waters will end up eating the garbage thinking that it’s food and get sick, but eventually die. Furthermore, later on we will be infected, then we will get sick and eventually die afterwards. So, that is why you need to do something about Auckland’s number one problem. POLLUTION!!

Archibald Baxter

Archibald was once forced to join the war, but he refused to join. So, people thought that he was scared and called Archie a coward. But, he knew that he was not a coward, because he was the only one to have courage and say, “NO” to the whole town. Then, he decided join war after all. But, since he refused at first, the other soldiers were ordered to torture him. For Example: Tying to him a pole, outside where it’s cold and snowy for long periods. Once they let him go, his hands would turn black because of all the congested blood. When they tied him up, the ropes were so tight, that it stopped his circulation. Nearly dead. But, he still wouldn’t surrender. He had more courage than anyone that was battling in war. Even though he was still being tortured and he never ate. He was the best soldier there could be.  

Superhero - Description

Hey, Meet my superhero friend, Scars the predictor. She has the superpower to tell future when someone is in trouble. This gives her the ability solve police crimes. Scars also has 2 other powers, she can turn invisible and run super duper fast. To get her superpowers, she was once struck by lightning and the next day, scars had found out that she had superpowers by accidentally turning invisible all by herself. She is courageous and also pleasant.

She has eyes like the pacific ocean, blended in with the dark night sky. Her hair colour is like red hot peppers, pink like a strawberry donut and cyan like blueberry smoothies. The style is a plaited crown around her entire head. The main colours of her super suit are black and violet. When solving crimes she wear a black mask and a yellow utility belt. Just saying she got her name scars, by having a lot of injuries, which turned into scars a few months later. Scars also has some other colours on her suit like: Red, Blue and Yellow. She looks so awesome in it.

Harry's War - Letter to Ted

Week 1 Reading Task

Text: Harry’s War by Mark Derby (School Journal L3 June 2014)

Using the text, create a short letter from Harry to Ted. In this letter, Harry is going to tell Ted that the war is over.

Think about:

• How Harry feels at this moment in time.
• How Harry believes the other soldiers feel at this moment in time.
• What Harry misses the most about home.
• What Harry is least looking forward to on the trip home.
